Our Expert Home Office Moving Tips

It has become more common for people to have an office in their home. Whether you work from home or need additional office space for paying bills, organizing paperwork, or conducting routine family business, chances are you have a room dedicated to your home as an office. With more people creating home offices, the designs have become more elaborate, and the added technology is state-of-the-art.

So what happens when you move? You will need to pack your home office and take it with you. Continue reading to learn more about moving your home office, including organizing and packing electronics, and know that our Philly movers are ready to help you.

Use Strong Cardboard Boxes

Packing electronics and heavy office equipment requires stronger boxes than the standard moving box. Ensure the cardboard boxes you use are thicker and stronger, making them capable of transporting all your office equipment. Additionally, when packing electronics in boxes, properly label them so you know what is in the box, and anyone helping you move knows to be careful when moving the boxes and packing them into the truck.

Use Packing Paper

Packing paper can help protect items from damage and add padding around office equipment before it’s packed in the box. Ink-free newsprint packing paper is available where you purchase moving and packing supplies.

Use Bubble Wrap

Like packing paper, bubble wrap can help protect items inboxes during the move. Bubble wrap can be wrapped around office equipment, or it can be used to fill in open spaces inside moving boxes.

Label Everything

Moving is a chaotic time, and if don’t know what is in each box, it can make the move more stressful. Make your move easier by labeling everything as you pack items from your home office. To help with inventory, number each box and list all the items in the box. Having everything properly labeled can help make unpacking and getting your new home office setup much more accessible.

Keep Sensitive Documents Together

Pack sensitive documents, such as birth certificates, Social Security Cards, passports, medical records, and other family documents. It is best not to keep these in a moving box but instead place them in a file folder or smaller box you can pack in the car.

Back-Up Everything

Before packing your computers, make sure to back up all your files. You can either upload everything to the cloud, download it to an external hard drive, and keep it with your essential documents. If something happens during the move, your files are backed up and ready to install onto your computer.

Add Extra Cushioning for Your Electronics

To help keep your electronics secure, you want to add extra cushioning. You can use sweaters, blankets, towels, or other soft materials to cushion your electronics while transporting.

Divide Books into Multiple Boxes

If you have many books, be aware of where you are placing the books while packing. Filling a moving box with all the books can make it heavy and challenging. It is best to put a layer of books on the bottom of all your boxes and then pack your other office supplies and electronics in the same box.

Label Cords

Even if you plan to pack the cords to your electronics in the same box as the device, it is best to label each line with what item it goes to. Label cables, use stickers, hanging price tags, or wrap cords, place them in a bag, and label the bag.
